this paper examines the situation of atacame？o and aymara organizations in the chilean andes, focusing on the crucial role state institutions have played in their formation and functioning, as a consequence of the chilean state′s need of institutional counterparts. it also discusses the conflicts and tensions within one of the newest and most important of such organizational figures, the indigenous community.
