the european rural world has experienced a deep transformation in the last decades, especially mountain areas, as result of a renovation of economical activities and professions. this process is related to the generalization of postmaterialist values (environmental, quality of life, etc.) and social demands, such as rural tourism or the appreciation of food products. in this sense, rural societies receive new residents that involve new lifestyles, interests, representations, etc., and a new vitality to local communities. in sum, it’s an economical, social, ideological, and political renovation. a renaissance of mountain areas that generates new opportunities for economical and social revitalization, but also brings new challenges.
