Abstract:

we present, without the intention to generalize, a collection of opinions of male and female teachers from rural schools of the araucanía region concerning mapuche childhood and adolescence, and some aspects of their life. an exploratory study, collected opinions of teachers about participation, parent's expectations about their children, intercultural bilingual education (ibe), mapuche upbringing and discrimination. the work was conducted on mapuche pewenche, nagche, wenteche and lafquenche territorial ground within the region, starting with a field trip aimed at getting initial information about relevant topics that would give us a scoping vision of mapuche childhood and adolescence in the araucanía. our aim is to contribute improving curricular organization and pedagogic practice in general and intercultural bilingual education in particular.
