Abstract: in this work an analysis of kinematic error in cycloidal gears with variable center distance has been done to evaluate their application in the cane and agave mills. the involute gears are not susceptible to the change of center distance that occurs in these mills. but there is a problem of teeth interference which occurs in mills involute gears when the number of teeth is small and the change of center distance is relatively large. this takes place in the agave mills with center distance equal 20 inches that does not permit to utilize completely the advantages of involute gears. nevertheless the cycloidal gears never have interference in the tooth foot; the complete tooth height is in use. but these gears are susceptible to the change of center distance. in the case of change of center distance the kinematic error occurs. for evaluation of kinematic error in cycloidal gears a substitution mechanism of six bars and two slides is proposed in this work. it simulates teeth engagement in cycloidal gears. the composition of equations of closed mechanical circuit of this mechanism and their numerical solution by the method of newton-raphson let us evaluate the kinematic error as a function of gear axes separation. this error does not exceed 20% of the gear ratio when the separation of the axes is maximum, equal 2 inches for the agave mills with 20 inches center distance, and it can be considered permissible when the mills velocity is only 7 r.p.m.
