Abstract: this article presents the results of an evaluation study of mapuche people’s linguistic capacity in their original language, mapuzugun, in southern chile in the regions of biobío, araucanía, los ríos and los lagos. the study shows a high degree of heterogeneity among and between regions in the use of the native language. the recessive distribution of the original language and the dynamic acquired in modern times allows us to define it as a language quickly losing ground to spanish.
