Abstract: abstract this paper focuses on the process of documentary creation of a testament written in the old province of merida in 1620 with particular interest in the grapho-phonic, morphological, and syntactic analysis of the text. the document reveals a language with the characteristic properties of a system in transition between two linguistic norms: the disappearing medieval norm and the modern one in process of settling. it offers a vision, partial though, of the spanish written in mérida in the first half of the xvii century. this particular spanish showed already the features of the context in which it was evolving: the social and cultural structures inside which it was settling, changing, and functioning.
