Abstract:

in this paper the rock art motifs found in the great engraved grotto at chiquimí (yocavil valley, catamarca province, argentina) are described and reinterpreted. the motifs were originally found by adán quiroga in the 1920s and rediscovered after being forgotten for 100 years in a remote corner of the valley. a review of quiroga’s pioneering work is presented, followed by a description of the grotto’s location in the landscape, with mention of nearby major archaeological sites. lastly, a morphological analysis of the rock art works is undertaken, along with a study of their production context and functionality. using the ancient rock art motifs found in northwest argentina and northern chile and their associated interpretations, the engravings are located chronologically during the time of agropastoral societies.
