in this essay, i examine fragments chosen from the ecclesiastical and political affairs by a. komninós ipsilántis, a work written in the xviiith century in archaizing and ancient greek in the ottoman empire. these fragments refer to two dignitaries who represent, in particular way, byzantine legitimacy in the ottoman empire. the essay aims at situating the oriental roman culture within the dimensions of its inner context, as it was considered by its actors at that moment, and notjust by foreign traditions.
