Abstract:

the commercialized spanish adaptation of the neo personality inventory- revised (neo pi-r) was standardized on samples assessed in personnel selection settings. although these norms are appropriate for situations when persons may distort their responses, they are inadequate for situations with low social desirability such as research settings with volunteers, -the context where the original neo pi-r was developed and standardized. this study is the first to provide normative and reliability data of the commercialized spanish adaptation of the neo pi-r with volunteers from the spanish general population (n = 682). internal consistency estimates were excellent (alphas ≥ 0.85) for the neo pi-r dimension scales, whereas they ranged from adequate to good (alphas ≥ 0.60 and < 0.80) for 25 out of 30 neo pi-r facet scales. the standardized differences in neo pi-r scores between the volunteer sample and the personnel selection sample of the commercial norms reached mean absolute values of medium size (d = 0.53). this result supports the development of specific norms for situations where persons do not have a direct interest in distorting their responses. norms for male and female volunteers are provided, and the utility of these norms for different settings of personality assessment (e.g., clinical contexts) are discussed.
