Abstract:

it has been often said that rosas, looking for the order he doggedly prosecuted in buenos aires along his entire political career, moved and imposed in the city methods and practices already working in the country. nevertheless, his order in the urban space had certain elements that were different from those of the rural one, namely the existence of the "terror", political crimes not committed by state agents but by a sort of para-police organ, the mazorca. why was the main action of this famous group centred in the city and not in the countryside? on the contrary of the popular classes, the porte?a elite -which lived for the most part in the urban space- was a group difficult to discipline by the dependents of the government, like police. however, the mazorca had no limits; nobody could control a corps acting illegally, only linked to rosas and the club of rosist followers called sociedad popular restauradora, to which the mazorca members belonged. the article analyses the characteristics of the mazorca, it periodizes its action and traces some of the elements used by the regime to legitimate its presence, such as to make sacred the federal cause, republicanism and the classist component, which was crucible in federalism.
