Abstract: this article begins with a detailed analysis of, and recognition of the virtues of, the 1999 venezuelan constitution for the indigenous peoples. it also indicates how this recognition served to stimulate the self-esteem of the indigenous communities, however, it also indicates that almost all of the transitory dispositions, which stipulated time limits for the transformation of the principles into a reality firmly rooted in law, have been ignored or otherwise frustrated, including those calling for a delimitation of ancestral territories, with the result that venezuela in this respect has advanced less than other latin american countries with far less progressive constitutions.
