Abstract:

several publications on morphological aspects of the corpus callosum (cc) show the interest, as well as the necessity of solving disagreements, on the influence of age and sex. numerous reports refer to its surface in the midsagittal plane of the brain but few refer to its perimeter. the objective was to determine the cc perimeter and surface and to establish the relationship between these values and sex, cerebral size and age (range 15-82 years and sub-ranges). in magnetic resonance images of 194 normal subjects of both sexes, the cc perimeter and surface in the midsagittal plane and parasagittal brain surfaces were measured by means of the scion image program for windows. the values were statistically processed (anova) and correlated with age (pearson correlation coefficient (r) ) in both sexes the cc surface significantly increased between 15 and 40 years (r: 0.33 y 0.60), diminished after 60 years (r: -0.72 y -0.78); and remained unmodified from 41 to 60 years. the surface is larger in women only in relation to brain size. this work supplies data on perimeter and surface values of the cc which significantly vary with age but not with sex. the relationship between both shows variations of the cc shape with age. it is evident that if only wide ranges of age are analyzed false conclusions may be reached
