based on the documentation preserved at the politischen archiv des ausw？rtigen amts (files on the foreign policy of the federal republic of germany with seat at berlin), as primary source, the way in which the german diplomacy conceived the crisis that led to the fall of president carlos ibá？ez and to the beginning of a period of political and institutional instability that would only be overcome by the end of 1932 is analyzed.
