Abstract: the paper presents a reading of jack london's tale "the shadow and the brightness", showing how the principle of mimesis works in the process of the identification. we propose to call psychical monochromes the spaces of mental indifference between the self and the other. we follow the thesis of roger caillois: "the self is permeable in the space". in this perspective, the subject of the double, developped by freud is essential. we try to show the dialectic of the structure of the look based in some notes about the work of the blind photographer bavcar. the article finish with showing the possibles connections of all these points with the clinical work.
