Ten years expirience in the treatement of chronic middle ear imflammation

Aim To investigate the diagnostics and treatment (conservative and surgical) of chronic middle ear inflammation in patients, within the 10-year period.Methods The analysis was based on the data from the medical history of patients with the diagnosis: exudative otitis media, and the results of surgical treatment of chronic purulent middle ear inflammation with or without cholesteatoma, operated and postoperatively controlled at the Polyclinic ''Dr Ge o'' Sarajevo. Results There were 748 cases of chronic purulent proceses of middle ear. In 101 (13.5%) the bilateral process was present and in 265 (35.4 %) it was unilateral. Surgical treatment was applied in 51 (6.8%) cases, and the rest of 697 (93.2%) cases were treated conservatively.Conclusion The best functional results were achieved by tympanoplasty. The most frequent recurrences of the disease appeared in the cases with cholesteatoma.
