Operation characteristics of the four-stroke engine of the type 12CHN 46/58

The analysis of a number of directions improving design and operational characteristics of medium-speed marine diesel engines is shown on the example of the engine of the type 12CHN 46/58 (Wartsila 12V46C3). It is shown that diesel companies have significantly increased the compression ratio, the ratio of the piston stroke to the cylinder diameter, quantity and diameter of nozzles in injector nozzles in order to increase the efficiency. It helped to intensify the processes of injection, mixing and combustion. The duration of the combustion process has been significantly reduced, and thus the efficiency of thermal energy converting into mechanical energy has been improved, which led to a substantial increase in fuel economy.
