Abstract:

The cynic philosopher Lucian of Samosata was, among the authors of classic antiquity, the one that most influenced the formation of the literary canon that clearly that constitutes a philosophical tradition in the fiction of modern times called “Lucianic tradition”. Writers such as Erasmus of Rotterdam (The Praise of Folly), Rabelais (Pantagruel), Swift (Gulliver’s Travels), Voltaire (Micromegas), Quevedo (The Thief), Thomas Morus (Utopia) and Machado de Assis (Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas) were admittedly influenced by the tradition of menippean Lucianic satire and made extensive use of various discursive and stylistic resources created or disseminated by the philosopher. The Lucianeum corpus is one of the greatest legacies for the posterity; through him we have access to a set of texts that use the derision as an instrument of creation and philosophical criticism.
