The article aims to identify and analyze representations produced by governments in Brazil and Argentina to classify social protest and its protagonists between 2000 and 2005. Working with the concept of "nomination power" (Bourdieu, 2007), the study analyzes speeches by executive power representatives regarding protest actions, published in newspapers from 2000 to 2005. Through thematic content analysis, the speeches of ministers, presidents and spokesmen are examined in the categories of: protest actions of MST and the piqueteros; MST and piqueteros as political actors; and official reactions by the government to such actions
