On Being Here with Others: Space, Identity and JusticeAbstract: The American Men’s Studies Association promotes ethical values of equality and inclusivity across such social barriers as race, ethnicity, and class. I explore two practices, characteristic of hegemonic masculinity—a focus on time as an organizing principle and maintaining an individualist self-identity—that undermine these values. Reflecting on the spatial orientation and communal identities of indigenous peoples, I argue that these provide helpful correctives on the way to more adequate visions of and work for justice.
