Abstract:

Inthepresentstudy,postnatalontogeneticsizeandshapechangesinthecraniumoftwolagomorphspecies,theplateaupika(Ochotonacurzoniae)andwoollyhare(Lepusoiostolus),wereinvestigatedbygeometricmorphometrics.TheontogeneticsizeandshapechangesoftheircraniumexhibiteddifferentgrowthpatternsinresponsetosimilarenvironmentalpressuresontheQinghai-TibetanPlateau.Theoverallsizechangeinthecraniumoftheplateaupikawasslowerthanthatofthewoollyhare.Thepercentageofontogeneticshapevarianceexplainedbysizeinthewoollyharewasgreaterthanthatintheplateaupika.Theoverallshapeofthecraniumwasnarrowedinbothspecies,andmorphologicalcomponentsinrelationtoneuralmaturityshowednegativeallometry,whilethoseresponsibleformusculardevelopmentshowedisometricorpositiveallometry.Themostremarkableshapevariationsintheplateaupikawereassociatedwithfoodacquisition(temporalisdevelopment),thoughotherremarkableshapevariationsintheincisiveandpalatalforamenintheventralviewwerealsoobserved.Themostimportantshapechangeinthewoollyharewasdemonstratedbytheelongationofthenasalbones,expansionofthesupra-orbitalprocessandshapevariationoftheneurocranium.
