Abstract:

Overview of global Hg cycling and impacts of policies and global change. Yellow numbers are estimated pool sizes in global reservoirs, and arrows indicate exchange processes between major environmental reservoirs. Pool sizes and exchanges are strongly modulated by anthropogenic emissions and releases (blue arrows) which transform in the atmosphere and deposit to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems (green arrows). The Hg cycle will continue to experience disturbances due to changes in anthropogenic emissions and will be increasingly affected by land use and climate change, which remobilize (orange arrows) Hg that has accumulated in environmental reservoirs from previous Hg emissions and release
