A Note on a New Eponym Name and its Date from Neo-Assyrian Period

Abstract:

There are some 50 Neo-Assyrian tablets and fragments derived from illicit excavations in Kahramanmara? and most of whichare being preserved in Ankara Anatolian Civilizations Museum andKahramanmara? Archeology Museum. The tablets and fragments wereunder the name of “Kahramanmara?’ta Bulunmu? Yeni AsurcaTabletler” (Neo-Assyrian Tablets Found in Kahramanmara?) with anintroduction in English and submitted to Turkish Historical Society forpublication. Covering a time span of 90 years (703-613 BC), thesetablets are the most comprehensive legal documents found in Anatoliabelonging to the Neo-Assyrian period. Among these tablets written inNeo-Assyrian language and script, there is also one Aramaic docket. Interms of their content Mara? tablets provide significant and interestinginformation foremost among which is the differences in dating. Thispaper focuses on eponym year of ?ama?-iqbi (624/623 BC) attested aslimmu in the document bearing the inventory number 36.14.07 but notincluded in the Eponym List. Although many governors of the provinceof Zamānu are known from the documents belonging to differentAssyrian kings, ?ama?-iqbi is not attested before and he must be one ofthe last governors of the province of Zamānu. Additionally, in this studyby the help of prosopography the document (Marqasi 1) dated to theeponym Kanūnāya has been re-dated. The current data indicates thatboth eponyms attested for the post-canonical period
