Right to self determinaton and theories of right to self determinatonKeywords: Self determinasyon hakk?,uluslararas? hukuk,i? self determinasyon,d?? self determinasyon,self determinasyon hakk? teorileri Abstract: This article will examine the degrees of right to self determination in international law through the stages of the League of Nations and United Nations in the twentieth century; article also will examine historical, political, and philosophical roots of right as well as some theories developed in academic literature on the right to self-determination, especially since the 1980s. In this context, it will be shown that the self-determination is a political principle that is required to be observed in international law has evolved into a right bearing obligations with the works done in the United Nations in the 1960s. With the start of being considered self determination as a right, the distinctions between internal and external self-determinations have begun to be made. However, the issue has a multidimensional structure which originated from its relationship with other principles of international law, power relations, nationalism, democratic governance, cultural rights and human rights Especially due to its complex nature and the disagreement between the right to secession as a form of external self-determination and the existing international law some (liberal) theories on the right of self determination have been developed in the academic literature.
