Abstract:

After the K?se Da? victory, Van Lake basin area, which was fallen under Mongol ruling, was handed over to Thamta, the Georgian princess. The region, which become a province of Ilkhanids in 1259, was important in many respects. First of all, their great army could feed rich pastures in the region. On the other hand, taking Azerbaijan and north eastern Anatolia under control by Ilkhanids means the sovereignty over the routes to Eastern Mediterranean. Therefore, Hulagu Khan chose Mugan or Arran for wintery and The Alatags in the north of Lake Van for summery highland pasture. The Government of ?lkhanids ruled East and Southeast of Anatolia by dividing them into two provinces beginning from the Hulagu Khan term. One of them was the province of Diyarbakir whose headquarters was Mosul and the other was The Province of Van, whose headquarters was Ahlat. The Province of Van, which has shown great economic development in the time of Ghazan Khan, lost its power and the status continued until the end of 14th century. This article studies the ruling system that Ilkahnids were looking for in Van Lake area, after they recognized its strategic importance and established province. Together with this, the position of this province in economic and commercial system of Ilkhanids was studied in this research. In this way, importance of the region that was not considered in terms of Ilkhanids Anatolian policy will be better understood
