Abstract:

It is known that for a long time disputes concerning the problems related to translation and interpreting have not been settled down. There are countless different views and approaches of scientists about these issues. It can be noted that not only scientists are engaged in studying these problems. Many people are interested in questions related to linguistics and the works of scientists, who have dealt with the aspects of translation. In particular, Roman Jakobson, the prominent Russian and American linguist and literary critic of the 20th century, approaches the problem in a completely new way in his work “On the Linguistic Aspects of Translation”, first published in 1959. He suggests looking at the translation from a linguistic point of view. R. Jakobson, speaking about the ways of interpreting the verbal sign, distinguishes three types of translation: intralingual translation (or rewording), interlingual translation (or translation proper) and intersemiotic translation (or transmutation). This article makes a detailed analysis of one of the three types of translation, namely intralinguistic translation, put forward by Roman Jakobson in his classic work “On the Linguistic Aspects of Translation” and of the views of other linguists on the allocation of such a type of translation. Due to the evolution of the problems related to translation, intralingual translation (or rewording) maintains its full existence in science, despite its current peripheral situation emerging from its meaning and uncommon practical usage. This article aims to cover problems related to intralingual translation (or rewording). It focuses on the classification of its two types by linguists as diachronic and synchronous together with their detailed analysis, and presents a comprehensive review of the intralingual translation from the viewpoint of Umberto Eco - the Italian philosopher, writer, translator, specialist in semiotics
