Abstract:

Femoral fractures in the calves usually occur during fault foetal extractions. After birth, the most important factor causing diaphyseal fractures in calves is trauma. Fractures are usually oblique, transversal and spiral-shaped. Distal diaphyseal femur fractures of the calf’s are more difficult to heal than other diaphyseal femur fractures. Different internal and external fixation methods may be used to fix long-bone fractures in calves, depending on the type of fracture and the bodyweight of the calf Orthopedic plates, external fixators, intramedullary pins and nails are used for a successful fixation, depend on fractures’ type. The study material of this clinical case presentation was a 2-day Holstein calf with a complaint of limping to the Surgical Clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine the University of Ankara and a diaphyseal oblique and fragmented femur fracture in the clinical examination. Multiple intramedullary pins application was performed in the fractures fixation to fill the medullary canal and provide a more stable and functional fixation. In the clinical and radiological postoperative evaluation of the case, it was determined that the method was a functional method in the presence of fracture fixation in the calves
