Evaluation of Relationship Between Personality Traits and Preferences of Leadership Practices of Y-Generation Member Students in the Last Grades of Universities

Abstract:

Personality is a concept, which has been attracted of many disciplines such as psychology and sociology since centuries, that has various discussions on its definition, content and impacts. Similar to personality concept, leadership has begun to be a popular scientific subject especially in last century. On the other side, leadership may be thought an effective and wider concept than the personality, due to impacts on others in an organization and/or in a society for generations. Because of both the capacity of transition between generations and the ability to influence social structures, it would be useful to evaluate the concept of leadership in terms of personality and generation. In this frame, our study aims to whether there are relations or not, between the personality traits and preferences of leadership applications of individuals of Y Generation, who will give direction to next fifty years of our country and world, with a sample is composed of university students. With this aim, the assessment tools of the present study have been applied to last grade university students, who are in the public and private universities in Mersin city. In the analyses of those data, while there were significances on the extraversion and conscientiousness personality traits according to be student of a state or private university, other personality traits have been not affected by the same variable. On the assessment between the personality and leadership traits, there has been not any statistical correlation between the neuroticism and any leadership sub-dimensions was determined. The conscientiousness sub-dimension of personality has had no statistical correlation with the challenge the process and the inspire a shared vision sub-dimensions of leadership, while correlations with other three sub-dimensions has been found. Agreeableness, openness to experience and extraversion, which are the sub-dimensions of personality traits, has been negatively correlations with all sub-dimensions of leadership determined
