Analysis of Texts and Images in the 5th Grade Social Studies Textbook in Terms of Technology Usage

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to examine the use of technology in the Realizing Dreams unit in the 5th grade Social Studies Textbook. The document is a textbook used in the 2016-2017 school year. The qualitative research method and the case study design were used. The data were analyzed by content analysis. According to the research results, 3 categories and 67 codes were found in the analysis of the texts. The code of “Technological Tools Usage” was found to have the most frequent code whereas the code of “Institutions Established Depending On Technological Developments” was found to have the least frequent. There are 3 categories and 48 codes in the analysis of the images. The most frequent code was “Technological Tools Usage” while the least frequent one was "Technologists and Scientists" and “Use of Technological Tools and the Effect of Technology on Life”. It was found that the developing technological tools and the use of different technologies in different environments and the impact on the society are widespread and the information on institutions that are opened based on technological developments and have benefits for the society is not enough. In a similar way, it is determined that the visuals related to the current and changing technological tools are given weight and the visuals about the effect of technology on life are not sufficient. In conclusion, although there are some deficiencies, it mostly contains technology and it is determined that the contents are related to the use of technological tools
