Abstract: during the first three decades of the twentieth century the city of santiago incorporated three new modes of transportation that profoundly altered the city and the forms of movement within it: the streetcar, the automobile and the bus. beginning with analysis from diverse sources such as municipal archives, statistics, newspapers, automobile, and transportation union magazines, among others, the article attempts to reconstruct the fundamental milestones of the process of motorization and its impact on the daily experience of transport within the city. unlike other manifestations of urban progress, motorized vehicles were typified by their disruptive character that generated multiple conflicts and incompatibilities that then became established as distinctive characteristics of modern transit.
