Abstract: from the perspective of the social use of images, this article studies the relationship between graphic illustration from the editorial nacional gabriela mistral (engm) and the political imaginary of the military government. using the semantics of pictures, this article analyzes the unique contribution of some representative books to the development of the discourse of the coup as a "second independence." to that end the article crosses an iconographic analysis and a rhetoric of the image analysis with unpublished documents and government literature, publications from the editorial and pertinent bibliography suggesting that the illustrations, "illustrate" an anti-marxist and anti-party discourse. this symbolizes the patriotic and the unpatriotic, intensifying the dichotomy of the allendista and the post-coup experience, and ritualizing the celebration of september eleventh.
