despite being written for the general public, the publications of grete mostny and hans niemeyer (1983, 1984) offer the first scientific study of the pictographs of el médano, a remote coastal ravine in northern chile that contains more than a thousand marine and terrestrial images, including scenes of group hunting and fishing from seagoing vessels and guanaco hunting with arrows. it is argued that the data and interpretations offered by the aforementioned researchers present problems and raise questions that are pertinent both to the late prehistory of the northern chilean desert coast and to current studies of rock art.
